Arise Ministries is a small group of Christians of mixed denominations, dedicated to prayer, healing and reconciliation.

The group is led by Shirley Bowers, pastored by Rev'd Scott Watts and is based in Huntingdon, with prayer partners around the globe.

We do not have any magic formula.  We are just ordinary people with an extraordinary God.

The scripture 2 Chronicles 7:14 sums up our mission and our vision - “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.”

The name “Arise Ministries” comes from the scripture given to our nation - Isaiah 60:1 “ARISE, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”  We long to see unity spread throughout the body of Christ, so that as barriers come down, we can arise as God’s people and be the church God has called us to be.

Shirley Bowers is leader and founder of Arise Ministries, and author of “From History to Hope.”  Shirley has been married to Tony for over forty years and has lived in Huntingdon all their married life. Tony already had two sons when Shirley married him and they have had a further three sons and one daughter. They also now have many lovely grandchildren

Rev'd Scott Watts is an ordained priest in the Church of England, is Chaplain to Arise Ministries and a very dear friend.

Meet the Arise Team

Oliver Cromwell

On 9th September 2002, a team from Arise Ministries, led by Shirley Bowers, traveled to Ireland in an attempt to retrace the steps of Oliver Cromwell.

Cromwell a strong Puritan leader, as well as a son of Huntingdon (the home town of Arise), was appointed commander-in-chief of the army, and after the death of King Charles I  traveled to Ireland to squash any Royalist support.

Landing in Dublin on August 15th 1649, Cromwell immediately marched against Drogheda, a prosperous town at the mouth of the River Boyne about thirty miles away. This onslaught was successful and Drogheda was taken on September 11th 1649.

It was here the Arise team began their journey on September 11th 2002, however the difference being this time was they waited outside the town to be invited in, the opposite to what had happened centuries before. This was the pattern that was to be repeated at each town they visited.

The team carried with them a letter signed by eight church leaders from Huntingdon, saying how sorry they were for the pain the Irish people had suffered as a result of Cromwell’s actions. This also came with a prayer that where once hatred, bitterness and division were sown, there could now be repentance, love and unity sown.
